I have social media, why do I need a website?

While it’s important for businesses to have credible social media accounts, these don’t take the place of a self-hosted website.

Why?

Firstly, and most importantly, you don’t own your social media profiles. If Facebook decided to shut down your profile, or LinkedIn goes bust, you no longer have those profiles. When you have a self-hosted website it is yours to do with as you wish.

Secondly, it’s hard to take a business seriously if they don’t have a website and only have social profiles. Why don’t they have a website? Maybe they are a backyard business, maybe they are a new business without experience, maybe they don’t want to invest into a website for their business? Not having a website at all speaks for the credibility of your business.

Plus, social media profiles are difficult to use – when we build you a website it will be easy for your visitors to know who you are, what you do and how to contact you…something that is hard to achieve using a social media profile.

What is a self-hosted website and why do I need one?

A self-hosted website is one that you host on your chosen server (e.g. FastComet, Bluehost etc) so that your website can be viewed online.

It means that you own your website, you’re free to move it from host to host if wanted and you’re not limited in the functionality of your website.

On the other hand…

Web platforms such as WIX, Squarespace and GoDaddy, amongst others, advertise quick and easy websites that you can build yourself.

The downside of these platforms that they don’t advertise is that once you build a website with them your website is stuck on their hosting server.

Why is this important to understand?

Not having a self-hosted website means you don’t have control over your own website. Yes, you can choose what phone number gets displayed and add your own images. But say they have a security breach and you want to change hosts, or their platform goes bust…you lose your website.

Not only is there an issue for security and ownership, but these websites usually have limited functionality as well. You have a nice website that you built yourself, but does it work for your business like a professional website should?

The beauty of a custom designed WordPress.org website, which is what we provide at Polar Web Design, is you’re using an open source CMS. There is no limit in functionality, you own your website and you are free to move it across hosting if needed.

Our advice here is…don’t underestimate the importance of owning and being in control of your own website. A good website is an asset to your business and should be treated as such.

Why hire a professional website designer instead of building my own website?

There are two main answers to this question.

Firstly, a lot of background marketing and design knowledge goes into the websites that we design, making your website an asset, a 24-hour salesperson that works for your business. By building a website yourself you miss out on a lot of this knowledge and your website becomes more of a business card than an asset.

How long will the website take to build?

Once we have your order and all of your business details, your website will be ready for review within 3 weeks.

Can you help with the content for my website?

Yes, all we need from you is details about your business and we’ll write all the content for your website. An online form will be provided to you with your purchase so you can send us your information and images.

Will I get to see my website before it's finished?

We will send you updates on the progress of your website, however it will not be available to view until it’s fully built and ready for you to review.

What if I want design changes once my website is complete?

Once your website is complete we will notify you and provide you with an opportunity to test and review the website.

You then have 2 rounds of revisions of content and design. Extended revisions outside of this scope will be charged at our hourly rate.

Can I make changes to my website myself?

Yes! Your website will be designed for you and won’t need to be edited, however as your business changes over time you may find a need for changes such as adding an extra service, changing your contact details or editing your team members. Your website will be built using the WordPress.org CMS and we will provide training videos for you so you can make changes to your website at any time.
